Learning to Knit

Knitting is one of those crafts that are remembered by many of us sitting and watching our mothers or grandmothers do when we were little. Sometimes they even taught us how to knit, but we still have the patience to learn. Today, crafting and knitting seems to be making resurgence, with groups form all over the place.

There are several different ways to learn how to knit. I personally started so you'll find on video
YouTube.com and learning basics of casting on and knit stitch. I then joined the group, where I finally learned how to purl. These are the basic stitches for almost every project out there.

If there is no group near you, or you can not find one, see if there is a shop near you that you can attend and learn the seams. You can meet some other while you are attending and decided to start their own group where you are going to turn on each other home. My friend met his second knit friends in the restaurant.

Scarfs are a good item to start with, as they use the basic point, and small errors are not too noticeable. You can create a beautiful scarf with a simple knit stitch. Remember not to throw too much at the seams, and depending on your yarn, it can end up very wide. If the scarf does not interest you, you can also work on a dishtowel.

Even with a simple knit stitch, you can create many wonderful things. Until the fall and adding stitches, you are able to change the width of the items to create a pattern. Discoloration can also create an interest in everything you do.

When you decide you're ready for something more, you want to find patterns (unless you prefer to create out of my head). You can see if family members have any books, you can check the library and the internet, or you can always buy books to use.

Knitting is a great way to while away cold winter nights. If you make a quilt, you can even stay warm while you're working on it after it gets big enough!
